Acne and exercise
A moderate exercise routine not only will help your skin but will also keep your body healthy and reduce your stress levels too. If your acne problems are getting worse during exercise you will have to examine your routine because this acne is cause not by the actual exercise but rather by the clothing you are wearing, the actual place you are or the peace of your work out. Try to remove these outside factors and you might solve your workout acne breakouts.
Some of the things to watch for when managing acne and
exercise:
- Make–up : put on as little make up as possible. Even the non-comedogenic (non-pore-clogging) type cosmetics can clog the pores during heavy work out. Wash as soon as possible after exercising.
- Sunscreen : if you are exercising outdoor always wear sunscreen. Acne can improve after short periods of sun exposures but studies determined that longer exposures are promoting comedones (clogged pores) and sun damage as well. Some acne medication can make the skin more sensitive and in these cases sunscreen becomes even more important. Look for oil free sunscreens and at least SPF 15 for both UVA and UVB rays. And with make up, it is important that you wash as soon as possible after work out, because sunscreen can build up in the pores and clog them.
- Clothing : if you have an acne prone body you should avoid clothing made exclusively with lycra or nylon. These types of fibers can trap heat and moisture against your skin and can create the medium for bacteria and contribute to your acne formation. For moderate exercising the best to wear is loose fitting cotton or a lycra cotton blend. Natural fabric will allow the skin to breath and loose clothing will not create friction. If you have a vigorous routine and sweating a lot you should try some of the never fabrics designed to wick moisture away from your skin.
- Equipment : Sport equipment creates friction with your body and you can get acne formed in that area or aggravate the one you already have. So your best defense is to wear loose fitting clothes, your helmet is sitting properly on your forehead or your wetsuit is not too tight around your arms. As an extra caution you can use some cotton lining in your helmet. Regardless of the sport you are practicing it is a good idea to keep your equipment clean and dry.
- Moisture : Remember your mom’s advice – change your wet clothes! After any kind of exercise – treadmill, trail, tennis court or any others – always shower immediately and change into dry clothes before driving home. If this is not possible, change your clothes and use a dry
clean towel to wipe down as much as you can. Vigorous wiping can irritate your skin, driving make up and sunscreen deeper in to the skin so try an blot gently rather then wipe. So if it’s possible to shower immediately don’t hesitate to do it and use a medicated exfoliant cleanser but apply it gently. Hard scrubbing will not do any good to your skin; on the contrary it can irritate existing lesions or promote new ones. A good alternative if showering is not possible is medicated pads, keep some in your gym bag just in case, and use them to wipe down your body.
So keep up the good work. A good workout will promote a healthy body, and a health body can mean a healthy skin. Just remember the various factors mentioned here and try to remove the acne triggers – this will take you on your way to a breakout free work out.
