The pros and cons of using retinoids to treat acne
Retinoids are becoming very common in the treatment of acne. These are
substances derived from vitamin A that can cure acne by normalizing the
lifecycle of follicle cells. There are 2 types of retinoids based on
application: external (topical) and oral.
More known external retinoids are Retin_a, Differin and Tazaroc, while the most
popular oral retinoid is Accutane.
Because retinoids derive from vitamin A they are able to reduce the
secretion of oil from the glands located in the skin and effectively fight
against acne.
In long term because the secretion of the oil is decreased the hair follicles
will not clog and turn into pimples and in majority of cases acne will disappear
by the end of the treatment period. Some patients, however, who used Accutane or
similar drugs based on isotretinoin, can relapse and will require additional
treatment.
But Retinoids do present a drawback and that is the endless list of side effects
that can make them look like a disease rather than a cure. Because of the side
effects Retinoids are only used under the supervision of a dermatologist.
The doctor will always recommend a few month distance between the treatments if
multiple treatments are required. Some of the most common side effects seen are
nosebleed and dry skin. Other patients reported liver problem and very few even
depressions, but the depression is creating controversy in the scientific world.
The worst sides effects seen in pregnant women are birth defects, so female
patients are encouraged to use two separate form of birth control or vow
abstinence while on the drug. Pregnant women will only be allowed to use mild
treatments.
Conclusion is that retinoids are good if one can handle the side effects. So
some people are rightfully asking why not use something effective but with no
side effects.
Systems like ClearPores are very popular because of their effectiveness
in treating acne and not having all the side effects of the retinoids.
You have the choice to choose your own acne treatment.
