What you should know about acne
Acne is a problem for individuals not only in their youth, but in their adult life
as well. A majority of sixty percent of the population has an acne problem beyond
the teen years. There are no acne cures, however, with reliable acne treatments,
you can control it and reduce the possibility of scarring.
Main Causes of Acne
As we understand acne, no 100% complete acne treatment is yet discovered, but rather
some of the main factors that cause it. The overproduction of sebum by the sebaceous
glands appears to be the main cause of acne, besides hormonal imbalances, stress,
improper diets, alcohol consumption, smoking and other such unhealthy habits. Sebum
is our skin's natural defense by retaining moisture, but too much of it can cause
the pores to clog, which will conduct to acne breakouts. The acne symptoms (enlarged
pores, redness, pimples, blackheads, oily skin) can be dominated using birth control
pills, some cosmetics, moisturizers, even diet. Rosacea is a different thing entirely,
don't confuse it with acne, and make sure you understand that acne treatments are
not efficient in this case. Rosacea is a skin condition that includes skin blemishes,
small bumps and almost never whiteheads and blackheads.
How Diet Affects the Skin
Some foods, like chocolate, are known to cause acne breakouts. There is no scientific
proof to sustain this affirmation, but everyone seems to agree so. It is important
to choose a well balanced diet, containing fibers, zinc, whole grains and nuts.
Generally, it should be about foods that include B vitamins, especially B2, which,
in too small amounts causes oily skin by stimulating the sebaceous glands to produce
sebum. Another necessary thing to your skin is water, which you should drink more,
in order to eliminate the toxins through urine, instead of perspiration. A good
diet definitely helps keeping a healthy and young skin.
Control Your Acne with Supplements
Since not everybody eats naturally grown fruits and vegetables, it is recommended
to consider supplements to complete the body's necessary nutrients. They come handy
too if you eat a lot of "junk food" or fast food. Choose a multivitamin complex
that suites to your age and gender and complete it with a B vitamin, zinc and a
fatty acid, like gamma-linolenic acid.
Skin Care is Very Important
Before applying any acne treatments it is necessary to cleanse the skin with warm
water and some mild cleanser. Strong astringents and cleansers are to be avoided,
because they will irritate the skin and dry it, which will cause the sebaceous glands
to increase the sebum production. Careful: under no circumstance squeeze the pimples,
especially without a cleanser nearby or your skin condition will change for the
worse! This causes skin inflammation and possible acne scars. You should use mild
soap, antibacterial lotions, a moisturizing cream and other such products. Makeup
is only accepted if it is water-based. If you are using oil-based makeup, your superficial
skin layer will be dry and the oil produced by the sebaceous glands will remain
under it, causing acne breakouts for sure.
Good Medical Options are Available for Acne Sufferers
If you have a bad case of acne, you should definitely see a dermatologist, which
will prescribe you, maybe, Retin-A Cream, antibiotics or accutane if your acne is
acute. These acne treatments are available only on prescription. Efficient over-the-counter
acne treatments are very various, only some of them are really effective. There
are ones based on benzoyl peroxide, some on tea tree oil and other kinds. There
are lots of acne solutions, it's most important that they help YOU, not a general
type of acne, because we all are different and, even if we have the same problem,
we don't always have the same solution.
